Welcome
Conewago Valley School District recognizes that wellness and proper nutrition are related to students physical well-being, growth, development and readiness to learn. All foods available in the district schools during the day are offered to students with consideration for promoting student health and reducing childhood obesity. Foods provided through the National School Lunch Programs comply with federal nutrition standards under the School Meals Initiative.
Lunch Program
Each school in the district has a cafeteria that prepares nutritious meals daily. Students and adults in the elementary and secondary schools can purchase lunches. Students may also bring a lunch from home and purchase milk in the cafeteria.
All students in grades K-12 deposit money into an "account" to purchase meals and/or a la carte items through the district's point-of-sale system. Monthly menus are available to all students.
Free and Reduced Lunch
Conewago Valley School District participates in the National Free and Reduced Lunch Program. Students from families who qualify (under federal guidelines) will receive lunches free or at a reduced cost. All students in grades K-12 may purchase free or reduced meals through the point-of-sale system. Applications are available at all school building offices. These applications may be filed any time throughout the school year for any family experiencing income changes. All information is confidential; discrimination is not permitted in accordance with district, state and federal requirements. Students receiving free and reduced meals in June 2009 will continue to receive free or reduced meals until Wednesday, September 30, 2009, or until your new application is processed. CAFETERIA PROCEDURE REGARDING STUDENTS' LUNCH ACCOUNTS
Parents are responsible for providing their children with lunch money or to provide a packed lunch from home. Parents are encouraged to put money "on account" for all their students in the district.
These procedures are intended to outline the parameters of charges for school meals and to set a process for collection of funds due to the district.
Students in Grades 7-12 are verbally notified when their meals account balance reaches $5.00. Students in Grades K-6 are given a written reminder when their account balance reaches $5.00 or below.
Written reminders are sent home with students in Grades K-6 when an account balance is negative. There is no charging allowed for Grades 7-12. If a student does not have a packed lunch or money to purchase a meal in Grades 7-12, he/she will receive a cheese sandwich and milk. Students in Grades K-6 who reach the $10.00 maximum amount owed will need to pack a lunch, bring money to purchase a lunch until the debt is paid, or receive a cheese sandwich and milk. Students are only allowed to charge for meals only- no ala-carte items.
No student with a negative balance or money will be able to buy anything ala carte.
