CVIS School Counseling Services

School Counseling services are provided to students at CVIS by two school counselors. They are concerned with the educational, emotional and social development of the students in relation to their total school experience. Guidance personnel work directly with students and serve as a resource for parents, teachers, and administrators in helping students meet their developmental needs.

The School Counseling program at CVIS consists of:
Individual Counseling
We work with students individually with a number of concerns a student might present, such as friendship issues, difficulty in the classroom, conflict resolution, new student orientation, difficulty coming to school, anger management, to name a few. Referrals for students to talk with a member of our staff can be made by classroom teachers, parents or the children themselves. Confidentiality is maintained to ensure the privacy of the individual student.

Small Group Counseling
Small groups are formed based on needs and can consist of a variety of topics throughout the school year. Small groups usually meet weekly for 6 – 8 forty minute sessions. Typical topics for small groups might include friendship, family change (separation and divorce), self esteem, or school success skills.

Classroom Counseling
Grade 4
Fourth grade students receive a guidance lesson each six day cycle. These lessons are built around each of the “character count” traits, (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship). Our goal is to help empower students with the self-knowledge, coping and life skills that will enable them to become self-directed learners, clear and effective communicators, collaborative workers, creative problems solvers and involved responsible citizens.

Grade 6
Sixth grade students also receive a guidance lesson each six day cycle. These lessons are centered on the JA Biztown Curriculum (Junior Achievement). All JA programs are designed to support the skills and competencies identified by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills. It provides practical information about personal finance and the importance of work related skills including interests, interviewing and its correlation with school success.

Student Support Team (SST)/Behavioral Support Team (BST)
Purpose

The goal of the Student Support Team (SST) and the Behavioral Support Team (BST) is to maximize individual student success in the regular classroom. SST is designed to offer assistance to those students who may be experiencing consistent academic or behavioral difficulties in school. SST works with students who have been recommended by parents, teachers or other school personnel.

Procedures
The SST/BST concept is based on team work. The team is composed of the principal, parents, classroom teacher, school counselor and school psychologist. Other school personnel and representatives from community agencies may also serve on the team depending on the need of the student. Once the student is recommended to SST, assessment of the student’s academic, behavioral and coping skills occurs. Team members, including parents, then meet to form an action plan for the student. Parents help decide what strategies should be implemented to help the student achieve success in the regular classroom. These strategies will be implemented and evaluated over a set period of time. At the end of this time frame, a follow up meeting is held to determine if the child has made adequate progress. Further discussion will include continuation of strategies, changing of strategies or recommendations for further monitoring or testing.

Homework Club
The before school program runs from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday each week. Homework club provides an opportunity for students to complete homework, learn study skills, and practice organizational skills in a positive, non-stressful atmosphere. The students may work individually, within a group, or with one of the many instructional aides within the program. If you would like your child to participate please contact Mrs. Reichart or Mrs. Wildasin or your child’s classroom teacher. Click here for Permission Slip to join!
